What's a "successful" strength supplement?

OK, I know this site is about supplements for all kinds of things, but I think most men using it are looking for supplements that will increase muscle mass and strength (besides fat loss).

How would you define success for a muscle or strength supplement? Let's say that a supplement helps you gain muscle or strength. Would it need to keep you that big or strong without you having to eat more in order to maintain it? Would eating more gain you that much muscle or strength regardless of whether you took that supplement?

For me, a strength supplement is only useful if it gets me stronger given a constant (high quality) caloric intake, and allows me to retain that strength when I go off of it. I already know that increasing my food intake will get me bigger and stronger without any supplements. For this reason I am extremely skeptical about especially the non-hormonal strength supplements around today. I'm posting this because I'm currently in week 2 of using USP Labs Prime. I've experienced a strength increase, but I believe it's only because of additional body mass due to increased eating (over the weekend!).

I think the test for a strength supplement is - do you miss it when it's gone? That is, if you keep everything else in the "equation" the same, such as training and diet, do you have the same results after you've stopped using the supplement??

If so, then the product isn't doing much for you. But if you lose strength afterwards, then chances are it was doing its job. However, it's hard to judge if you increased your intake only when using the product, because more food usually translates to more strength on its own. Of course, it's possible that the product is amplifying the effects of an increased caloric intake, which would be good.

Ideally, a supplement would allow you to keep your strength once you stop using it, but that's not a strategy that's going to move much product.

Anyway, keep us posted on the Prime, I've heard some interesting things.

thats an interesting question. i would say it varies from one to the next, especially as most products dont carry over very long after discontinueing use.

i would say creatine is always a good answer. you dont unsaturate fully for about 20 days ish i believe if my mind serves me right. and you dont really lose the gains as some claim, or atleast i havent.

other ones i would say would be natural t-boosters or AI's in most cases, though i dont have much experience, i will be trying novadex soon, and i hope its good

Very interesting post and very true.

From my experience, strength supps like those PreW formulas, creatines and non hormonal supplements, work more on the mental side rather than the physical one.

Ive tried many and when im``on`` I tend to increase my strength, be more motivated, get more stamina and endurance. However when i go ``off`` I lose most of my strength gains very quick. I call these supplements more like Placebo!. There are very good ones, but IMO most of them are placebo, but if placebo works, well...

As you said, the calories from food is what will make you gain\lose strength, on clean bulks my strength is constantly going up but when cutting, i tend to lose a lot.

I was reading a couple of Prime threads (and lots of reviews), and some of the people are saying stuff like "if you train hard and eat right then it will work."

My point in this thread is that salt & pepper will "work" if you train hard and eat right.

BTW, I don't have any positive results with the Prime yet, and I've completed 3 weeks. Review coming next week.
